Description
The 1915 Rent Strikes have been described as the most successful example of direct action ever undertaken by the Scottish working class. Tens of thousands of tenants went on strike, eventually forcing the government to implement rent controls via the 1915 Rent Restrictions Act, and also to the Addison Act (1919) which paved the way for state-funded municipal housing. This women-led struggle remains a pivotal example of mass tenant mobilisation and coalition building between the housing and labour movements.
While the archive includes a few items relating to this renowned history, it focuses on subsequent, lesser known, instances. We’re currently collecting materials about the Arden SSHA Rent Strike (1958 – 1959) and the prolonged Gorbals Rent Strike Against the Dampness Monster (1975 – 1981).
