Title

Council Housing Struggles (1950s-)

Description

The 1915 Rent Strikes resultant Addison Act created mass council housing for working class communities but since the creation of this provision , its been under attack, under invested in, poorly maintained, or sold off, leading to a range of housing struggles across the city. This collection documents the council housing based campaigns, including the 1950s Merrylee Campaign against council housing sell off, to the Anti Housing Stock Transfer Campaign, against what became the largest privatisation of housing in Europe. The sell off moved council housing under the control of Glasgow Housing Association, (now Wheatley Homes) in 2003 and led to widespread demolition programmes including Sighthill and Wynford, which have decimated public housing.
