Description
Migrant housing struggles have become prominent in Glasgow from the early 2000s when Glasgow became a dispersal city for migrant settlement. Migrants were often housed in disinvested and hard to let housing estates. These communities not only faced poor housing conditions but an increasingly hostile environment enforced by the Tory government which saw dawn raids deployed to seize and deport those seeking asylum. More recently those seeking asylum are at the sharp end of privatisation and outsourcing as the government gave SERCO ( and later Mears) the contract to provide this housing to asylum seekers.
In this collection we document anti-raid watches in the city and campaigns against the conditions of hotel housing.
We are keen to document lesser-known histories, stories and campaigns involving migrant communities, especially before 2000s.
